Western and Wildlife Artist.

R E Swirsky Fine Art (Ray)

   Welcome to my website!

I am a Calgary Alberta based oil painter, painting mostly western themed historic artwork. As a self-taught Métis artist, born and raised in Kimberley BC, my practice is a continuous act of remembering, anchored deeply in the roots of our ancestors and the ever evolving landscapes of the North American frontier.

My creative focus currently thrives in the Historical Series, where I manually hand-paint mid-to-late 19th and early 20th-century archival maps directly onto the raw canvas using ink pigments. By hand-painting realistic oil imagery over these vintage topographies, I am creating a visual connection, and a historical truth that anchors the stories of the past onto the physical coordinates of the present.

There are two distinct paths in my historical series:

  • The Indigenous: A background map acts as a rigid, colonial blueprint and is overlayed with oil portraits of the indigenous people from turn-of-the-century photographs. Using translucent washes, the ink lines of the maps bleed through the flesh and regalia of the figures forming a stark, beautiful paradox: a people spiritually unified with the land, yet bound by the artificial lines drawn to contain them.
  • The Early Settlement Works: Bringing forth the history of early European expansion and settlement, I pair early maps with historical snapshots of the era as the west was opened up to the incoming settlers. I capture a pristine pocket of time-showing how these sacred wilderness spaces began to face the changes of industrialism forever changing the landscape.

I look at my historical artwork as a visual tapestry of time, an ongoing dialogue between the changing North American landscape and the fragmented layers of our collective history.
